Dr. Schafer's Book

Choosing a liposuction procedure should be taken seriously, and with adequate research. This book will assist you in making that decision. An informed patient can expect optimal results from a procedure by knowing what questions to ask during the initial consultation, as well as during and after the procedure. Once you’ve decided to proceed, your body — as well as your self-esteem — will be greatly improved. A PATIENT’S GUIDE TO LIPOSUCTION: How to Make an Informed Decision, offers a thorough description of liposuction techniques and was written to help patients confidently select both procedure and surgeon. Dr. Schafer details what to expect before, during, and after surgery.
Excerpt from book: “Today, staying youthful is critical in order to successfully compete in the business world. The majority of liposuction procedures (90 percent) are performed on women, however this dynamic is changing; more men are making the decision to “tweak” their face and physiques, but don’t want it to be obvious. My “Weekend Recovery” makes it possible to have a cosmetic procedure on Friday and return to work on Monday, looking refreshed and rested.”

In “A Patient’s Guide to Liposuction”, Dr. Jeffrey Schafer has produced a thorough and concise text written in layman’s terms to describe the various procedures of liposuction, the enormous strides in technique and equipment, and those qualities required for candidacy for the treatment. He emphasizes that the procedure is aimed at body contouring, not weight loss, and that while it will not necessarily change your life it will certainly improve your body permanently.
This is a practical book. Dr. Schafer takes you step-by-step through the initial consultation, pre-op, game day, and the recuperative period. He suggests that a potential patient see at least 2-3 doctors before selecting one and provides you with the right questions to ask, e.g., how many procedures has the surgeon done, does he answer all your questions without seeming to rush you and provide you with before and after pictures of your procedure on patients that he has actually treated.
If you have always thought of liposuction as a procedure that just removes unwanted fat cells from particular parts of the body, you may be surprised to know that there are specific procedures that treat from the face and neck down to the calves and almost anywhere in between. It is even possible to transfer adult stem cells found in fat tissue from one part of the body to a target area, e.g., to smooth out wrinkles in the face.
Dr. Schafer’s credentials are impeccable. He has been in practice since 1973 as a certified cosmetic and reconstructive surgeon, concentrating the last 25 on liposuction. We cannot imagine anyone seriously considering this procedure without reading this book.

Thank goodness this book wasn’t just one of those books that are created in an attempt to sell something, in this case, liposuction surgery. It was instead a valuable resource for information about liposuction surgery. The size of the book was perfect and covered exactly the right topics that a potential patient would want to know. Dr. Schafer’s chapters include a history of liposuction techniques, how liposuction works, determining whether or not you are a good candidate for this type of procedure, choosing the best surgeon, and what to expect in terms of the procedure, recovery, side effects and complications.
I like how Dr. Schafer included photos of before and after images of different parts of the body of patients who had undergone liposuction surgery. Pictures are, after all, worth 1,000 words. He is also very thorough about explaining the differences between liposculpture and liposuction and body contouring as opposed to weight loss. He was even a dear to include information about retail stores and websites that offer bodyshaping garments.
Well-written, easy to understand, thorough, and logically organized, this little book is a good read. More than a pamphlet but less than a tome, it is the perfect size with just the right amount of information that a potential liposuction patient would need. I also appreciated reading Dr. Schafer’s bio at the end of the book, demonstrating his extensive expertise, experience, and training in this area.
